It’s a common misconception that the abbreviation “IR”, when used in reference to remote controls, is short for infrared.  This simply is not the case.  In the case of television and media player remotes, the control signals are not sent by infrared, but instead are sent via an ultra-high frequency audio signal that is outside of the range of human hearing.  In these instances, the IR stands for “Internal Rupture”… because this is eventually what happens to your eardrum of you use these remotes too often or for too long.
