Lie of the Day #420

January 1st, 2008 by Fweeb

In 1308, researchers that were appointed by the French royal family determined that society as a whole was becoming less punctual and that the government should actively take measures to remedy the upcoming flood of truant behavior. They decided that years ending with the number 8 should be declared “punctuality years”, in which punctual behavior will be rewarded with cake and lateness would be harshly punished with public whipping and ridicule. Unfortunately, the edict that declared this ruling was not announced until 2 decades later in the summer of 1327. Due to the lateness of the declaration, no one has ever taken it seriously.
