Shoe laces are a surprisingly recent invention. The original shoe laces were sharpened steel rods that basically stapled the shoes to the wearer’s feet. This, of course, didn’t last too long and the concept of using string was stumbled upon as someone was using strips of cloth to bandage feet that were bound with shoe staples.
